Surrounded by buildings on 3 sides, this 5 story RC apartment building, SARA, is in a central residential area facing a road on the north. In Japan, especially in Tokyo, apartment buildings in crowded areas tend to have windows facing the road for lighting and evacuation reasons. Plots facing roads on the north tend to be across from buildings with southern facing windows, making privacy difficult.
SARA has organized each standard floor into 3 apartments, 1 in the front facing the road and 2 in the back, thus drawing in outdoor space and creating depth. Windows face these open spaces. Each rooms have transparency sliding door to separate bed space and living space. By creating spaces outside the windows that reflect the relationship to surrounding buildings, we have created a living space where you can comfortably open the curtains and experience the city.
