Renovation in São Mamede, Bombarral
Located in São Mamede, Bombarral, in the district of Leiria, this project involved the full renovation of a small single-family house with just 35 m². The property was in a severely degraded state, although its structural walls were still stable. The aim was to transform it into a functional and comfortable living space, designed for a single person or a young couple starting out, by making the most of its limited area.
The main intention was to preserve the original exterior character, maintaining the existing façades, colours and textures, in harmony with the surrounding street. Inside, however, a complete transformation took place, the space was reimagined as a loft-like open plan layout, allowing uninterrupted visual flow. The goal was clear, to maximise a sense of spaciousness and light in a home with only two façades allowing natural openings.
The layout was conceived in a linear way, one enters directly into the living area, which flows through the kitchen and leads to the bathroom at the back. A mezzanine, accessible via a light staircase, accommodates the bedroom, offering privacy without breaking the openness of the space. Natural light is enhanced through two electrically operated skylights, strategically placed on the roof, one above the dining area and another near the sleeping and working zones, ensuring daylight reaches the core of the home.
The materials and colour palette were carefully chosen to balance simplicity and warmth. White and green tones on the walls were combined with the warm textures of wood, present in the flooring, furniture and staircase, to create a serene yet characterful atmosphere. Black elements, such as faucets, light fixtures, handles and the staircase railing, were used sparingly to introduce contrast and refinement. Slatted wood panels and open shelving add both texture and function, while continuous flooring enhances spatial fluidity and visual coherence.
From a technical standpoint, the intervention included the complete replacement of the roof, while preserving the original materials, using a wooden structure and traditional Portuguese terracotta tiles. Smart use of dead spaces, such as storage beneath the stairs, was essential to maintaining functionality without adding visual clutter.
Inspired by a Scandinavian aesthetic, modern, functional and nature-oriented, this project demonstrates how compact spaces can be turned into complete, elegant and comfortable homes through thoughtful design and careful attention to detail.
