This home sits adjacent to the childhood home of our client. His mother still lives in the 1931 cabin-like residence next door. The challenge was to design a volumetric light filled box sensitive to its context. The result is a beautiful juxtaposition of the new and old - it speaks to the generations that inhabit the homes and to the evolution of a neighborhood. This project demonstrates how a traditional neighborhood can successfully evolve. Our intention was to blend this home with its environment, not compete with it. This was accomplished by building the front court around a large live oak tree, recalling the silvery color of the live oaks in the exterior colors and cladding materials and by sensitively massing the forms. The gallery like interior of the house continually reminds us of its context. Careful window and door placement takes full advantage of views, inviting the trees in as part of the interior landscape.
