Santa Elena de Piedritas School
Piedritas is a remote rural community located close to the town of Talara in the Piura region. The community has one of the lowest levels of human development in the region and limited access to basic education. In 2003, the group Endesa (Eepsa & Edelnor) sponsored the construction of the first and only school in the area with the help of the community. The Santa Elena de Piedritas School had secured the land of 2,000 square meters plot and built it in a 970-square meter area. However, the current infrastructure is deteriorating due to the high temperatures of this arid area, and further construction implementation was needed in order to improve the existing educational facilities and increase the number of prospective new students, as the existing school buildings have become too small for the 85 children attending the school. The new structure provides an open healthy environment for over 100 children to learn and play. The community of Talara was fully engaged throughout the design and construction process, by creating models, recycled art and play spaces to enliven the school yard and inspire the students, teachers and greater community.
