The navigli was a system of navigable and interconnected canals around Milan, in Lombardy, Northern Italy. Originally intended for irrigation, quickly the canals were used to take salt, grain, wine, manufactured goods, fabric, tableware, manure and ash upriver to Lake Maggiore and Switzerland, bringing back livestock, cheese, hay, coal, lumber, sand, marble and granite. Many barges of different size and dimension were used to ship these goods until seventies.
This project is a proposal to re-use one of this barge, used to carry sand and construction materials, in my new studio space, in consideration that Milan it’s a very expensive city (to rent or buy a department) for a very small architectural firm.
The space used to stow the sand is covered with a lamellar wood structure of seven composite arcs, here we projected a single open space with entrance, reception, waiting corner, office with eight working place, meeting room and a kitchen; in advance the front hold is used like a storeroom and the engine cabin is used to build the bathroom.
The choice to realize a green roof is, of course, for energy-saving reason , but also to create a garden used during the break time and available to the common citizens as a small recreational space. The illumination is provided by a recessed led system that allow to control the different working areas lighting level. In order to contain cost, all the furniture drawn will be bought by IKEA furniture.
The 3D project was developed with Google SketchUp 8, and the furniture used are from Google 3D Warehouse, thanks to all the developer. And the illustration is developed with Adobe Photoshop.
