San Mateo Public Library is a symbol of the ever-increasing role of the library in the community. More than fifty open workshops elicited the community’s aspiration for an elegant civic building with the warmth and intimacy of a living room, linking downtown San Mateo and an adjacent residential neighborhood. The LEED® Gold building has a civic arcade that welcomes visitors, revealing interconnected interior public spaces in which the celebration of daylight helps meet aggressive sustainability goals. The library’s state-of-the-art technology, including automated book sorting, frees staff from the back room to better serve visitors.
