Robert Nebolon Architects’ San Francisco Floating House is a whole lot more spacious inside than it appears upon a first look. The comments about the house have been interesting and range from the modest/local to the grand/international: The house is local; industrial and mod “steel shipping container style” metal paneling along with a saw-tooth roof, both commonly found in large manufacturing plants nearby. As for the grand/international, comparisions to the Sydney Opera House have been mentioned: white saw-tooths (facing fore and aft) containing the primary space on top of a dark (blue) podium that contains the services spaces; waterside location and marine associations. Any and all comparisons--even "over the top" ones-- have been welcome.
Within the white exterior on the top floor, one large primary room is where friends and family all gather. Here, the large warehouse windows in the walls and in high clerestories allow views of the water below and the San Francisco Skyline on the other side of Mission Creek. Oftentimes, small water-craft are present on the creek which offers more interest. Within the blue exterior below, bedrooms, bathrooms are and service areas are located. There is a basement with a game room and bedroom!! 5'-0" below the waterline for more efficient space! More storage is placed under extra-high beds (see the picture!)
The home is 2,100 square feet and sits on and within an 18’-0” x 42’-0” x 6’-6” high concrete barge for some permanent stability. Being located where it is, the front door has the signature ‘Golden Gate Bridge International Orange’ all over it. The interior metal staircase references the bold color as well, with plenty of light soaking windows and natural finishes to create a more calming effect on the contemporary space.
The floating house appearance can be best described as California Coastal, California Modern, warm modern, San Francisco Modern, or Bay Area Modern architecture
