San Fernando Cathedral is the oldest Catholic Cathedral Sanctuary in the United States. Integrating new mechanical and electrical systems discretely within the historic fabric of the building was a challenge but beautifully executed. Restoring the cathedral properly meant interpreting the importance of the cathedral’s earlier periods while still allowing the church to serve the needs of contemporary liturgy. The result of this dramatic restoration will allow generations to enjoy this historic landmark. Adjacent to the beautiful and historic Cathedral, the new construction Cathedral Centre was built to support tourist and educational functions of the site. It contains a museum, gift shop, sacristy, restrooms, dining space and mechanical equipment. The U-shaped structure, built of matching limestone, creates a courtyard space for outdoor functions and ceremonies. Photos are by Chris Cooper.
