Previously an unadorned concrete-walled flood control channel, this stretch of the San Antonio River is now graced by a 4-block long contemporary interpretation of the H.H. Hugmann world-famous Riverwalk. Though in some respects similar to the original 1930’s portions, here the pedestrian strolls along stone paths while the river flows beneath.
The design team developed a solution which minimized the displacement of flood water while allowing all major structural work to be completed in only nine calendar days. While meeting these stringent hydraulogical and construction requirements, the design allows for a variety of pedestrian experiences relative to the water’s edge - high/low, close distant - resulting in an undulating series of walkways and planters. In turn, the need for railings and protective devices was also minimized. Tree wells provide needed shade for pedestrians and aquatic life and add visual interest along the path.
