SALT explores critical and timely issues in visual and material culture and cultivates innovative programs for research and experimental thinking. SALT positions itself as sites of learning in the city center of Istanbul.
SALT’s Beyoğlu building sits on İstiklal the busiest pedestrian street in Beyoğlu. The building was exquisitely renovated by Han Tümertekin in 2013. A new set of renovations in 2018 re-configured the entrance and the cafe. The spaces are designed based on the experience from SALT Galata with a desire to provide open generous spaces for SALT’s community.
A new information desk was designed for the entrance level, complementing the existing stair, guiding the visitor up through the building to the café and the galleries. The cafe was enhanced with a spiral stair for better connectivity to its mezzanine, leaving the lower level as an active area for workshops and meetings. The mezzanine is planned as a ‘study room’ for those who would like to concentrate. A custom table series was developed that cherished a sense of lightness.
