Sailwinds Visitor Center

Cambridge, MD, United States

YEAR
1996
SIZE
5000 sqft - 10,000 sqft
Located on the scenic banks of the Choptank River in Cambridge, Maryland, this 6,000 square-foot facility is a focal point for Maryland's gateway to the Chesapeake Bay. Functioning as an entertainment and tourist center with an adjacent park, travelers are drawn to gather and relax before continuing on their journey. The overall exterior design of the structure alludes to ship construction and is reminiscent of the nautical spirit of this historic area. Panoramic views of the river and surrounding marshlands can be enjoyed from the second-story observation deck of the center.

There are two levels of open and flexible space for changing exhibits with indirect natural light. Sustainable features include native plantings that support and preserve the wetlands, natural ventilation and a shade structure to avoid AC usage and a gray water irrigation system.

Additionally, the Sailwinds Visitor Center complex promotes Chesapeake Bay ecological preservation through native plantings, shoreline stabilizations, and outdoor interpretive signage.
