SAHAI Lao Coffee Roastery Located in the heart of Luang Prabang—a UNESCO World Heritage City renowned for its rich cultural and architectural legacy—SAHAI Lao Coffee Roastery is housed within a restored colonial-era building. This project reflects a thoughtful interplay of history, culture, and contemporary design, creating a space that resonates with both the city’s past and its evolving identity.
The concept for SAHAI draws inspiration from the Lao word “Sahai”, which means friend, companion, or fellow traveler. This term, commonly heard within Lao military circles, became the foundation of a design narrative centered on connection, camaraderie, and shared journeys. The vision reimagines the austerity of Soviet-era communist design, merging it with the raw, functional aesthetics of industrial roasteries to produce an environment that bridges tradition and modernity.
To honor the historical context of the site, the design adopts a restrained yet bold material palette. The interiors feature polished concrete floors and walls, conveying a sense of industrial refinement. Metal accents and rose gold piping underscore the roastery’s utilitarian functionality, while military green—a nod to the project’s conceptual roots—acts as a unifying color throughout the space. These industrial elements are contrasted with a handcrafted counter, which introduces warmth and creates an inviting focal point for customers.
The spatial planning is meticulously crafted to cater to both local traditions and tourist experiences. Recognizing the significance of the morning almsgiving ritual (Tak Bat)—a daily practice deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of Luang Prabang—the coffee bar is strategically positioned near the entrance and pedestrian pathways. This placement facilitates early morning service, enabling the shop to become a hub for participants seeking a quiet place to enjoy coffee and engage in conversations.
This project aspires to create a seamless dialogue between the building’s colonial heritage and its contemporary use. By preserving the architectural integrity of the structure while introducing minimalist industrial elements, the design establishes a sense of continuity that respects the past while embracing the future.
The interiors also feature signature wall art inspired by the story of SAHAI, incorporating Lao cultural motifs and abstract forms that reflect the essence of coffee and community. These artistic elements elevate the space, transforming it into both a functional roastery and a cultural landmark.
SAHAI Lao Coffee Roastery exemplifies a holistic approach to design, where architecture becomes a medium for storytelling. By blending the rugged simplicity of communist and industrial aesthetics with the warmth and intimacy of traditional Lao culture, the project creates a space that is not only visually striking but deeply meaningful. It forges connections between the historic and the modern, the local and the global, and the individual and the collective—embodying the spirit of Sahai as a place where friendships and memories are brewed alongside coffee.
