The house in question is a 5 bedroom, 3 bath 2,900 SF 1943 Art Moderne tri-level structure with a nod to the international style. It is located in Land Park, where most of the vernacular tends to be more traditional, but there are a few modern homes from the 30’s and 40’s that dot the neighborhood. We purchased the house in March of this year and completed the remodel in early June. The overall idea was to bring the house back to its glory by correcting some design flaws that had been made over its 70 years, but not build a time capsule. The house needed to be current, but respect the past. We replaced all of the 1980’s retrofit windows with wood European tilt/turn windows that match the few remaining original windows. We redesigned one of the staircases that had been part of a late sixties remodel that was not so thoughtful to the original detailing. We added the wood dowel railings that were consistent with the other three stair runs. We remodeled the entire downstairs, which included a media/game room/library space, a dining space, bathroom, and kitchen. Both bathrooms features custom vanities designed by me and fabricated by local trade persons. All the tile was acquired locally from Heath Ceramics. Nearly all materials and labor was local, the appliances were purchased off Craigslist and off the showroom floor of an appliance store. All cabinetry was designed by me and fabricated locally. The lighting was purchased locally through Lumens. The toilets feature dual flush. The kitchen is contemporary, but features period detailing. The cabinets have no door hardware; instead we replicated the 1” circular finger pulls seen on some of the existing millwork. It features some modern convienances such as an integrated coffee machine and a cooking zone that includes a steamer, teppanyaki grill and an induction cook top.
