PROGRAM: spa for hikers and tourists using two
primary materials
SITE: slopes around lake saco, at foot of mt.
washington in new hampshire
CONCEPT: stimulate all of the senses, inducing
mental and phycisal relaxation by inviting people to be
present in their bodies
STRATEGY: entry sequence: long and slow,
bare-feet on warm, fragrant, creaking cedar floors; wet room: cycle between hot
showers, ice plunge, and steam created between them, contrast between warm wood
and cold stone, minimize outside views for introversion and expansion into
interior space; dry room: rest while contemplating beauty of nature, rustling of
trees and lapping of water on lake shore, expand back into the landscape

STRUCTURE: local granite and
cedar; masonry shear wall and post & beam combination
PROCESS: hand drafts, concept models, and
renderings
