‘RUPU’ means ‘empty space in the middle’ in Japanese. RUPU house is a house for a small family, which has an interesting story between the design process. From the start, the location of the house was next to the family’s old house, so there was a need for connection between two houses.
The first idea was to have the front part of the house, which was connected to road, to be quite closed for privacy, and the back part open to the garden and connected to the old house. However, during the design process, the owners decided to change the construction site due to the concern that the old house would be overshadowed by the new one.
Despite the change, the original idea could still be applied, as it could still respond to the sun direction and the needs of privacy. The front of the house, which faces the road, is also on the side where sunlight comes in a lot during the day, so the openings are mostly open to the back where there is a garden that is shaded throughout the day.
The owners wanted their house to look as neat and simple as possible. The design concept therefore intends to use only simplest geometric shapes, it is just triangle shape placed on a square shape, with least decorative elements. The triangle mass is also reflected in the interior space, the slanted ceiling cut to the roof angle creates a unique space. On the higher side of the triangle is where the mezzanine is placed, to be a private working area for the house owner.
The concept of simplicity does not only cover the architectural mass, but also the material selection. The choice of white materials for almost all the exterior highlights the simple geometry even more clearly.
