wall house/ rumah dinding is made for an invitational exhibition held by a group of young indonesian architects, curated by danny wicaksono. the exhibition calls for design exploration and interpretation of "houses without doors".wall house interprets the exhibition's brief as a design
simulation/ study
conducted by 2nd year architecture students, to explore their skill and
knowledge further on functional program and spatial organization.
wall house is a simulation of the absence of doors. the role of doors as an
important element that usually forms levels of privacy is substituted by the
role of walls. usually we can simply deploy doors to differentiate spaces
and their level of privacy. therefore, this proposal suggests a design
process that relies on the articulation of walls to achieve proportional
privacy levels. simply said, we design only walls.
wall house is a house with a linear spatial organization, with 8 privacy
levels. it means, to get into the most private part of the house, one has to
pass at least 8 rooms in a row. to get into another level/ room, one has to
turn at least once. it means, the more private a space is, the more distance and turns one has to pass.
the proposal is illustrated by two design variants with the same spatial
organization. the first wall house uses only perpendicular linear walls. the
second uses only curvilinear walls. the two variants show that despite the
same spatial organization, they both might offer different spatial
experiences.
