Description of Project:
Set within a plot of 2565 sq.ft. (45’ x 57’), the residence was designed for a family of five, comprising of a couple along with their two school going kids and father. Located within the heart of a calm residential area of similar plot sizes, it was designed as a personal statement of the client, culminating their quest for a perfect home after shifting 4 residences in previous 5 years. The design of their home takes its inspiration from the imageability of a house, comprising of bricks and sloped roof as often referred in common perception and relevant logos, and transforming it into a contemporary residence to suit the aesthetic and physical requirement of the client. The massing and zoning further dwells upon the site opportunities to make the building climatically compatible to the region and its surroundings.
Materials of Construction Details:
Since the couple, being industrialists, spends most of their day enclosed within their steel sheds and flashy corporate offices, surrounded by metal and machineries, the materials for their home was selected in contrast, which were usually soft in feel and natural in origin and texture, thus cutting them off from their professional life and demarcating their personal lives through warmth of their home.
Façade was primarily designed in Exposed Bricks and Concrete, left in their natural form. The brick is used as the background of the sculpted concrete overhang projecting out. Two different sizes of brick were laid in a Flemish bond pattern to break the monotony of the surface and subdue the mass. The entrance steps were made fusion of Kota stone & granite, derived from wastage. The flooring was selected to be Bottachino variant of Italian marble, forming contrasting colour & texture to the wooden furniture and staircase tread, primarily made of dark Valsad Teak.
The selection of natural materials not only made the building warm and welcoming, but also gave a timeless identity to the building, since natural materials and unornamented designs are found to be always in vogue.
Special Features:
Climate: The building mass was designed in coherence with the climate and surrounding, thus an uninhibited pair of openings were placed on ground & first floor in alignment to welcome early morning sun from east, while shielded for late morning harsh sun by overhangs. The hot Southern wall was accepted as common sharing wall, but a through cut out in slab was provided to bring daylight into the centre of the house around the staircase, reducing artificial lighting requirements during extended day time. West side, at back, had an apartment building on the adjacent block, thus the liberty was taken to offer huge openings inviting south west winds. The building was analysed and found to be climate compatible, yet optimally lit and ventilated.
Building Massing: Massing and skew in the concrete mass was used to enhance the sciography accompanied along with the building, coupled along with pergolas over balcony to make sure that the sun movement added a dynamic, ever changing character to the building and façade. Further the play of light and shadow was used in interiors to enhance the building experience, making transition into spaces more dramatic. Exteriors were primarily lit in warm hues in the evening.
Open Floor Plan: An illusion was created making the interior spaces look big by flowing the activities and spaces into one another with the help of an open plan, which further extends into the outdoors, like observed in the Living Room and Family Room, which flow into adjacent green space and balcony respectively. All the vistas from windows were designed accordingly to enjoy a desired view. Further, the spaces were connected vertically by an artistic sleek staircase encased within through extending exposed brick wall corner, thus binding all the floors visually, with through hanging lamps adding glamour to it.
Being conscious: The residence was designed to minimize the wastage of materials by allowing remaining material dictate part of our interior details. The residence in an attempt to seek “Indian Minimalist Design”, that is practical yet tastefully speaks of aspirations and inspirations of Urban Indian Residential Architecture.
