The Rubem Braga Elevator Complex aims to improve the accessibility conditions for inhabitants of the Cantagalo and Pavao-Pavaozinho communities, located on the Cantagalo hill, in the South of Rio de Janeiro. Besides joining the community and the neighborhood of Ipanema, the building also provides access to the General Osorio metro station and to all the transportation network of Rio de Janeiro, offering mobility to the local population.
The complex is divided into two towers connected by a pedestrian footbridge. Each tower has a set of panoramic elevators and stairs to access the community. On top of the first tower, there is an observation area with views to the Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. Thus, the Rubem Braga Elevator Complex not only integrates the community with the formal city, but is also considered a touristic attraction.
The architectural solution considered two basic premises: the stability of the natural slope, which was reinforced by retaining walls, and the amount of expropriations, which was kept to a minimum possible. The pedestrian footbridge was conceived having a single supporting node. Besides the construction of the main building, the project also proposed the creation of a public square and the renovation of the existing stairways, as an alternative access to the community.
The structure is composed by round concrete columns and steel deck slabs. Instead of a conventional façade, the use of metallic brise-soleil provided natural ventilation and shading. With colors varying from blue to green, the brise-soleil also suggest a soft transition from sea to forest.
