Pedder & Scampton were appointed to reconfigure and extend the rear of this detached double fronted family house in south London. The house came with a large and very beautiful Christopher Bradley Hole designed garden but the internal spaces along the garden frontage were dark and poorly arranged, felt cut off from the outside spaces and failed to take advantage of the lovely views up the garden.
We designed a new ‘orangery’ extension along the back of the house – an arcade of red brick with large windows and doors giving generous views and a direct connection to the garden. The additional space of the extension allowed us to create a series of sunny, linked but slightly separate, family spaces all facing out onto the garden with the utility room, cloakroom etc relocated to the darker spaces behind.
The staggered room arrangement opens up the whole of the back of the house as a single space where a range of separate family activities can take place at the same time (cooking, home working, homework, TV etc) whilst still allowing a connection between them. The new and the original spaces are all opened up with doors onto a newly landscaped terrace between the house and the garden.
