The purpose of this Design and Construct project was to provide a modest home including a granny flat. An illusion of space within the narrow 3,600-square-foot lot was created through the use of two garden courtyard spaces connected by the living area, using extensive commercial laminated glazing and passive solar design. The east and western masonry bookend elements ensure privacy and tranquility within its busy urban context.
Particular attention was given to embrace the northern orientation, allowing controlled solar access within the core of the residence. The single-story living space was positioned to respect the existing neighbors outdoor and living spaces and maintain their northern solar access and privacy.
The local Subiaco vernacular is reflected by the use of a simple white contemporary gable form contrasted with the woven red brick screen wall which creates a vibrant dynamic within the existing streetscape.
