Rowen House is a contemporary family home in Glen Iris, Melbourne, designed without a fixed client brief or known future occupant. Rather than prescribing how the house should be lived in, the design offers a range of spaces with different qualities of light, privacy and openness, allowing future families to make the home their own as their routines and needs change over time.
Set on a 15-metre-wide site with three neighbouring backyards along its western boundary, the house creates a sense of generosity through height, light and carefully proportioned spaces. A double-height opening runs along the western edge of the living and dining areas, bringing natural light deep into the home while high-level windows soften the afternoon sun.
Two separate entrances support different patterns of daily life. Guests enter into a quieter lounge centred around a stone fireplace, while the family arrives through the garage into the mud room and laundry before moving into the kitchen and living areas. This separation allows everyday routines and social occasions to happen at the same time without interruption.
Each living space offers a distinct atmosphere. The lounge is quieter and more enclosed, suited to conversation, reading or retreat, while the family living area is brighter and more open, designed for gathering and everyday life. Throughout the house, natural light changes the character of each room across the day. Some spaces receive direct sunlight, while others are shaped by softer reflected light.
The stair continues this sequence. Its curved wall creates a more enclosed ascent before opening at the top to full-height doors and the sky beyond. Above the family room, a circular skylight brings daylight into both levels, creating a quiet connection between the spaces.
The material palette is restrained, with Grey Tundra stone, off-white Venetian plaster and walnut joinery forming the foundation of the interior. Gold Titanium stone marks the dining bench and fireplace, while terrazzo, white mosaic and sage green bring softer character to the wet areas.
