The story of the Chengdu people's inseparable relationship with the sun dates back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties: the Gold Sun Bird Ornament, a mere 0.2 millimeters thick, expresses endless expectation. People crafted this ornament driven by devout longing to honor the heavens, its gold foil reflecting a divine response from the sun.
Last December, we exhibited at the first Chengdu Tianfu Art Season through an interactive installation, placing a sun-themed machine at the center of Tianfu Art Park’s square. We attempted to send a signal to the outside world by swinging it across 3,000 years, waiting for the Gold Sun Bird Ornament to respond by resonating.
In the unique city of Chengdu, Sichuan, live remarkable people. The sun has fostered optimism and open-mindedness within their hearts. Seniors exercising in parks radiate Chengdu's spirit to the world, while young people dancing in nightclubs spread an ethos of living in the moment across the nation. Inspired by this duality, we intend to design an installation integrating a horizontal bar with a disco stage. Through tangible mechanical forces, this project embodies both "movement" and "flexibility" – thereby inviting reflection on the dynamic equilibrium in human relationships.
The site occupies a central position at the intersection of the park’s main roads, directly opposite the main visitor entrance of Tianfu Art Park, and is surrounded by commercial buildings and the sky corridors. The omni-directional visibility of the site inspired us to put a "spectacle" here.
The organizers intend the venue to function both as a tourist resting point and a performance stage. Therefore, we selected the concave disk as the installation's primary structural form – its geometry enhances spatial openness while simplifying construction. The choice of bright yellow evokes associations with the sun, standing out vividly against the gray winter hues of Chengdu and the varied colors of the park. In this way, this "solar machine," in both color and scale, can be instantly spotted by passing visitors from all directions.
Two disks – one large, one small – are suspended above a shallow pool. The 8-meter-diameter disk serves as the core platform, while the adjacent 3-meter disk sits lower, acting as a transition between ground level and the main platform. The disks' resilience comes from a ring of base springs. Each spring is secured within a torsion-resistant and tilt-resistant sleeve, which ensures that the disks can only move vertically, thus maximizing the safety of the installation's interactions.
In order to echo the roundness and smoothness of the base of the installation, the horizontal bar element transforms into a vibrant curve, which is suspended above the disk in a high and low staggered posture and spreads outward. The curvature at the peak of the curve is gentle, thereby preserving the essential functionality of serving as a horizontal bar, while a swing is suspended at the highest point, swaying with the jumping crowd. The waist area where the curves shrink is connected by a flexible metal woven protective mesh, which stretches and tightens as the visitor leans on the mesh, providing a support that has/provides/offers both elasticity and stability.
Within this machine, everything is resilient. Once the machine is activated by someone, both it and all the people on it enter a constant state of motion. The people are either immersed in solitary enjoyment or resonating with each other, radiating interconnected energy into the surrounding world.
Three thousand years ago, people sought the sun's bounty through the Gold Sun Bird Ornament. Today, humanity can connect with the sun through their leaps and swings, for it resides within the soul —awaiting invocation. Don't stop. People will become the center of the world, resonating with each other, and the world will be born. Don't stop, they say, just as the sun never goes out, radiating energy and fervor.
