Coffee roastery and café opens in former community hall in rural Japan
This project is a coffee roastery and café located on the ground floor of a small mixed-use building in Tamba-Sasayama.
Set within rice fields, the building was originally used as a community center. It has since been reactivated by a younger generation and now accommodates a curry restaurant on the second floor and a used bookstore next door.
The design seeks to create a place that is both embedded in the local community and open to visitors from outside the area. At the same time, it focuses on making the process of roasting and serving coffee visible and accessible.
A large central counter forms the core of the space, with seating, roasting, and kitchen functions arranged around it. This layout allows visitors to follow the process of coffee-making from roasting to drinking in a continuous and direct way.
The configuration also brings visitors and staff into closer proximity, encouraging natural interaction.
Where conventional cafés tend to separate the kitchen and seating areas, this project instead maintains spatial continuity by carefully coordinating the height of the counter and the placement of fixtures.
Three-panel sliding glass doors open the interior to the surrounding landscape, creating a flexible relationship between inside and outside.
