Rotterdam Zoo – Lion House and restaurant
Renovation of tearoom and giraffes home that were originally designed by architect Sybold van Ravesteyn, between 1937-1940 he created the complete zoo.
The former giraffe house is now adapted for keeping lions with both inside cages and a new large outside area. At the back of the existing building a new shelter is added for animal management. Although the shape of the new additions revers to Van Ravensteyn’s architectural style, materialization is kept modern. Both new additions are abstract closed volumes clad with vertical bamboo slats.
The former tearoom, now the Lotus Greenhouse, continues to function as a restaurant. The addition at the rear of the building offers space for storage, utility room, cold rooms and a staff room. A a new balcony was designed to create more seating. The balcony floor offers an integrated solution for all air ducts.
The original glass facades have been restored with modern slender steel frames to create to original looks again.
This project was designed by the architect combination Siebold Nijenhuis Architecten, Broekbakema and Kees Rouw [Architecture & Research].
