The new Kudu stable (a kudu is a large African antelope) is a restoration and renewal of one of the larger stables designed by architect Sybold Ravesteyn in 1939 for the Rotterdam Zoo. The undulating shape of the roof and the elongated S-shaped plan are striking.
The kudu stable is as far as possible again restored to its original state. The ceramic roof tiles are reapplied, and all the woodwork is painted in the original colour scheme.
A new a public passageway perpendicular runs through the stable and anchored the new Kudu Stable in the Africa route of the zoo. The customized pivoting door is part of the wood siding and will always be opened during visitor hours, but closed for maintenance.
On the inside of the stall, the particular shape of the hood and all the woodwork is made visible and varnished so the natural look of the house is further emphasized. The building has thereby become very spacious allowing visitors to have a full experience of natural life inside the stable and be among the animals.
With the opening of the stable is a large project 'Heart of Africa' is completed in the zoo.
The project was designed by the architect combination Siebold Nijenhuis Architecten, Broekbakema and Kees Rouw [Architecture and Research].
