Designed by AREP and SNCF's Architecture Division, the new multimodal station is located in Northeast Paris – in the 19th arrondissement precisely – on RER line E, between Pantin and Magenta stations. It breaks the isolation of this district, which is undergoing extensive overhaul, links the east suburbs of the Paris Metropolitan Region to the city centre, and ensures connections with tramline T3. Accessible on foot directly via the south from rue Gaston Tessier and from the north via an underground passageway, the station itself will be located underneath the train tracks. This intermodal hub reflects a new way of thinking the interplay and relationship between the public area and urban infrastructures to ensure smooth, uninterrupted pedestrian access right up to the train.
The main station architectural blocks will be:
- a concourse consisting in 2 juxtapositioned volumes of equal length: one, 8 meters high will run underneath the platform and the other, 6 meters high, will run beneath the station floor slab, carried by two lines of circular pillars;
- a services building comprising 2 floors: the operating rooms will be on the ground floor and the technical rooms will be located in the upper level;
- a forecourt to the south will serve as a transition area between the concourse and the street. The forecourt’s transparent canopy will keep the rain at bay whilst letting in lots of natural lighting. This canopy will also assert and signal the presence of the station.
- an extra-wide underground passageway connecting the Mac Donalds warehouses to the rue Gaston Tessier. The northern exit of the passageway will be protected by a glass canopy.
The platform will count 6 points of access, making for easy pedestrian traffic. These points of access, served by escalators, an elevator, fixed staircases and ramps with a 10% slope will be lodged inside an incision and protection from the elements will be provided by a platform shelter of about 145 meters. The central part of the shelter will be transparent to funnel light into the concourse area.
