his is a project to renovate a 15-year-old condominium. The idea was to create a place like an oasis in the city where people can immerse themselves in the feeling of being in nature. Even in a city where many people come and go for business or sightseeing, once you enter the building, you will find a place like a grassy meadow.
Following the existing black sashes, the fixtures and built-in furniture are black frames and matte gray, and the functionally necessary elements are made to look like objects, a continuum of monotone frames and volumes. The walls and ceiling are uneven, giving the space the appearance of a sculpture painted with clay, while elements similar to natural materials, such as mortar, stone, and wood, were used to give depth and texture to the space. Some of the existing tiles in the water units and floor finishes were utilized as is. Since the renewed areas will eventually no longer be new, the paint color of the wood was chosen not to be too brand new, which would not change the impression.
The overall illumination is higher under cloudy skies because the sky light is more diffused than under sunny skies, but it is not dazzling because the sun is not directly seen. The approximately 80m2 living room, surrounded by bright air like soft white clouds, forms a place of diverse textures.
Due to the restrictions of the building, it was unavoidable for a pillar to appear in the middle of the living room, but by surrounding the pillar with a ribbed wall and folding the ceiling up to avoid the beam, the ceiling is made to look like a giant white tree, and the ceiling steps and pillar ribs are aligned in width to create a unified appearance. The pendant lights are made of heat-processed organdie fabric. While blending in with the ceiling, the size of the pendant lights was made to create an eye-stopper, adding an accent to the room to prevent it from looking monotonous.
The island kitchen is presented as a mass of marble, integrated with the dining table, and configured so that the kitchen overlooks the living room. The top of the dining table has a free curved irregular shape that can be surrounded from various directions, does not limit the number of people sitting at the table, and can easily accommodate guests when they come over.
The backs of the cupboards are mirrored to bring in the bright scenery outside the windows in the areas that are darkest during the day, and to eliminate the presence of the pillars behind them. A daybed was placed next to the ventilation window to take advantage of the darkness and provide a place to relax around the dining room or take a short break from cooking, and fabrics in soothing colors were used to blend in with the interior design.
The entrance hall was widened organically with mirrors to make it not just a passageway but a comfortable place to spend time. To avoid the use of matching mirrors, a full-length mirror was placed on the right side of the entrance hallway, and a large mirror was also placed inside the sliding door of the powder room. The mirror in the powder room was made to look twice as long as the wall, and the tile layout was designed to give it depth.
The bench and counter are a series of floating square volumes that have a function. Frequently used items can be quickly put away in the bench, which also serves as storage, rather than in the shoe closet, keeping the entryway looking neat and tidy.
When it is dark, the night view of the city can be seen from the living room through the terrace. When the curtains are closed, the indirect lighting in the curtain box creates a space surrounded by bright light that differs from the daytime aspect. The curtain rail in the service room also runs around the side of the door to the living room, so the curtains by the window can be replaced by curtains to block the view from the living room to the service room. When the curtains are closed, the sliding glass doors look like windows, giving the impression of a larger opening facing the outdoors.
The wallpaper used in the service room and master bedroom was designed based on a work Van Gogh painted when his nephew was born. The monotone-based space has a certain warmth to it, so that the guests will be able to spend time in the house with a long-lasting attachment to it.
