Room Mate Hotels is a Spanish chain of hotels founded in 2001 whose philosophy is considering visiting friends in each city as the best way of travelling. Room Mate Hotels, having almost 1000 rooms available for their guests, try hard to achieve the same characteristics of a true host. Having a great professional team at the client disposal, Room Mate Hotels offer their guests a comfort and warmth stay during their travel.
Having this concept of hotel in mind, their reasons for choosing Teresa as the designer of this space are obvious. An architect with great energetically designing projects that stem from emotions and feelings, and produce results which can convey them to the users just as they were felt by the team.
The whole building is divided into several differentiated spaces. Each area transmits the visitor an emotional and sensorial experience. Being inside the hotel is like a journey.
The floor of the corridors of each floor is treated in a different way. Different colors carpet strips are used in order the visitor to understand the transition from one space to another space.
The hotel could be divided into three groups: courtyards, restaurant and rooms.
COURTYARDS
The courtyards, large elements generating spaces and therefore, sensory feelings. In these courtyards the idea of "looking and being seen" has been stressed.
The two side yards are characterized for the use of printed canvas which can be seen through the windows, generating an illusion sensation, like if there were people really cooking. This way, the viewer becomes a voyeur that, from his room, looks to the other windows trying to understand what is happening in the kitchens, in the Pau’s spaces.
On the other hand, the central courtyard, an intimate space full of iris staring at the center. A faint light invites reflection. A perfect place to find yourself in an unknown city.
PUBLIC SPACES – RESTAURANT
The restaurant has an indoor and an outdoor area. The access to the indoor area is done through the core zones of the building, and from here, we cross to the outdoor area.
The developed idea in this zone consists on achieving a continuous space between the outside and the inside atmospheres.
A continuous bar helps us to get this effect, acting as a link and as a filter.
In the outdoor area, we find different treatments of the vertical surfaces using the green color as a common element to all of them.
These walls alternate striped painted surfaces with vegetal wall areas getting an open-closed gradient.
At the restaurant, we find fabrics normally used for men’s suits, as Pau is a man. The strategy used consists on using classic fabrics covering contemporary furniture giving the hotel a masculine atmosphere.
PRIVATE SPACES – ROOMS
All the rooms furniture has been designed by Estudio Teresa Sapey and is custom-made as a man’s suit. All the furniture is made on corian, an easy cleaning material, what is an essential requirement in a hotel.
The innovative fact of the rooms is the creation of a sink-closet, as an exempt element from the bathroom. The shower, the bidet and the sink are independent spaces.
Furthermore, it is worth mentioning the piece of furniture located at the top of the bed that contains all the necessary functions for the room mate client. It can be used for watching TV, working with the PC, reading a book…
The suite’s terraces have a very special railing that allows the contact with the city that is hosting, enriching and feeding us with its culture and its gastronomy.
That’s why the railing is lined with the image of the landscape that remains hidden behind the railing.
