Picture a haven nestled amidst the pristine confluence of the river and the Arabian Sea in Malpe, Karnataka. The mind naturally gravitates to the stunning vistas that stretch across both the waterbodies. And who could fault such imaginings? The allure of such views is irresistible. Yet, with this holiday home project, we dared to think differently. Instead of the usual orientation, we positioned the building along an east-west axis, incorporating generous overhangs on either side. A deliberate choice to capture the expansive views from both ends while minimizing the intrusion of direct sunlight.
This home is designed for togetherness, a place where family and friends can gather and create lasting memories. The layout separates the bedrooms from the common areas, connecting them with a serene pool and a versatile corridor-verandah-deck. The living, dining, kitchen, and bar exist as one expansive space - eschewing traditional room divisions. These areas embody the essence of home, so why confine them within walls?
The site’s natural slope presented challenges and opportunities. With the road to the west sitting three feet higher, and a gradual slope descending eastward. We embraced this natural gradient, ingeniously tucking a basement beneath for parking and services. This not only preserves the integrity of the landscape but also lends the structure a sleek, unobtrusive appearance when viewed from the road.
Our choice of materials was guided by a commitment to local craftsmanship. This home's beauty lies in its simplicity - a harmonious blend of wood and unrefined textures that celebrate the philosophy of wabi-sabi. Natural, warm hues and extensive use of wood weave throughout the design, creating a serene, inviting atmosphere.
Perhaps the home's most captivating feature is the deck. More than a mere transitional space between the two blocks, it stands as the heart of the residence, offering breathtaking views of both sunrise and sunset. Here, nature's grandeur is on full display, making it a cherished space for reflection and connection.
In this home, the only spaces truly defined by walls are the bedrooms—sanctuaries of privacy amid a domain designed for openness and shared experiences. It's a testament to architectural ingenuity, where design and nature coexist in perfect harmony.
