Set above the city, this rooftop garden takes advantage of the enclosure the building provides and views beyond that it frames. Working with the existing parapet walls that wrap the roof, we added a lounge room and row of trees that shape a quiet lawn space. Within this contained space, hints of the city beyond and the building below emerge.The roof deck around the yard provides an elevated platform that affords views of wooden water towers on top of neighboring buildings, while providing seating that rings the garden. The design frames the existing skylight from the loft below, subdividing the yard into spaces to gather, play or bath. By working with what exists, the design makes a quiet place that is animated by hints of the city around.
