The roof garden was designed for a UK based busy TV executive, over his existing luxury flat on the seventh floor of a block of flats in Nicosia. The garden is approached from the living room of the flat via a narrow staircase.
The aim was to design an open, shaded, cool, and private space for recreation and relaxation.
Space requirements included for a sitting area, a dining area, a kitchenette and a Jacuzzi. Structural limitations determined the position of the Jacuzzi, separating the space into the living area and the small dining area and kitchenette. The north side with the beautiful view towards the mountains was left open. The east side was screened off using a wooden trellis and climbers to prevent the neighbors overlooking onto the garden. The south side was also screened off, and together with the slanted aluminium roof and the existing west facing wall provides shading from the strong mediterranean sun.
The whole structure is fixed on steel beams that are simply sitting on the existing flat roof. This was done to prevent any damage to the existing damp proofing system, and to provide good fixing points for the wooden deck.
Water plays a very important part in the design. Apart from the Jacuzzi, there are twelve water spouts that supply water to the shallow stream that runs along the full length of the roof garden, providing coolness, and animating the space. The sound of the water helps to bring one closer to nature.
The planting consists of mainly mediterranean plants that can survive in arid climates with limited water supplies.
The blue lighting washes the walls providing a pleasant background, whereas the white spotlights in the stream, accentuates the water spouts.
