Roof extension of an apartment house - creating two new living units
The vacant attic of the apartment house in the North of Berlin offered space for more living space in the existing building - due to the increasing demand a sensible project. The client aimed to create two apartments for young, two to three persons households.
The organization of the floor plan arrives at integrating the limited height and set shape of the roof together with the North-South-orientation of the building as structuring elements.
Thus the large living room of each apartment is located under the highest point of the roof, oriented South towards the street – looking at the tip of TV Tower in the distance. The side rooms and the bedrooms are facing North towards the calm backyard.
The materials are chosen to be modest to cope with the flexible demands of a rented space. A homogeneous wooden floor throughout the principle rooms establishes a sense of width.
The particularity of the project is the placement of the dormers. Each dormer is as wide as the room itself. This way the inclination of the roof has no effect on the usability. The space can be used in its entire surface.
