In order to meet the increasing national demand for health sciences education, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy administrators desired to increase the capacity of teaching and common spaces on their dense urban campus. Built on the only remaining site available for expansion, the new Academic and Student Center was designed to connect students with one another and with the institution’s rich history.
The mixed-use Center balances the college’s modern objectives with its historical background: a stunning glass-enclosed atrium entrance provides a 21st century aesthetic while preserving the original grand columns of the adapted 1918 George Robert White building.
The Center houses a range of laboratories and classrooms as well as informal seating and social environments to enhance interactions between students, faculty, and staff. With teaching, research, and student residences together under one roof, the diverse Student Center fosters a community crossroads between the original campus buildings and the new facilities in a truly 24/7 urban environment.
