A new 9,000 sq feet private house replacing existing 1940’s detached
house.
The design is based on a central lowered courtyard to the rear, with the
accommodation arranged in a ‘U’, stepping up in half levels to create a
double height living room and split level views from the kitchen and dining
room adjacent.
The central lowered courtyard allows good quality accommodation to be
set below ground level relative to the street. This, combined with set backs at
upper floor levels allows the new house of 9000 sq feet to sit within the profile
of the existing house of 3,600 square feet.
Although the new house is clearly a modern building, it uses many of the design
features of the traditional properties adjacent, such as active facades,
pitched roofs, dormer type elements etc.
