This is a house for a rock star and his son. Their request for privacy and tall vertical spaces, coupled with a fascination for stairs, drove the design for this “modern gothic” home.
The façades, wrapped by factory-finished standing seam metal, enclose the studio, library and bedrooms surrounding a three-story living room volume. This public space, defined by a custom-fabricated winding steel stair and a rotating collection of artwork, is bathed in exposures of natural light which penetrate the open bar grating walkways and fill the house.
Pushing the limits of wood-frame construction, the house uses readily available off-the-shelf materials to generate a unique design impact. The wood frame, set on a base of site cast concrete, is clad in maintenance-free standing seam metal roofing and varying widths of fiber-cement panels. The standing seam metal widths were designed to fit within the module of manufactured windows, contributing greatly to fast and affordable construction.
This is not a prototype house but a specific assemblage of construction lessons learned. The influence of construction on design & design on construction is the fundamental premise that shapes the process for each of our projects. This alternative model of professional practice allows us the flexibility to take on various roles, and to ensure and implement high-quality, custom spaces for our clients. This project was designed and constructed by the same firm.
