Robina CPAC acts as a precedent in what can be achieved in terms of low budgets and high quality design. It provides multi-purpose areas for community hire and school use for training, sports, performance and meeting areas as well as a purpose built after hours child care facility. Previous experience with performance spaces highlighted the opportunity to integrate the building form with the tight, sloping site and acoustic requirements. The building incorporates a number of transitional spaces that offer additional functional and spatial opportunities that enhance the original brief and provide a quality development that addresses the street and public face while integrating the school facilities to serve the core functional requirements. Additionally, utilisation of external spaces between buildings provided additional learning opportunities, in both play and formal learning environments. The planning of the hall utilises the existing slope of the land, mirrored in the long skillion roof opening up to the higher end, and offers car parking under the hall on the lower end.The back of the stage opens up to reveal a small outdoor amphitheatre. This transforms the existing covered play space and grassy knoll into a viewing platform and amphitheatre, integrating new function into existing facilities. The building was divided into two parts to facilitate the requirements of the brief. The primary building was designed for versatility. The secondary building was designed especially for after hours child care. However the two parts are inextricably linked via the breezeway and grassed, open play space that spills off the forecourt and connects into the rest of the school. The primary building is set up on an East–West axis. Internally, large louver banks catch predominant breezes and high level windows facilitate ventilation. Outside, the breezeway along the northern face catches the breezes coming off the oval below. The final design works as a transitional space between the public street and the school. At the street address the roof form folds over the entry to form a protective ‘veil’ giving hints of internal activity, while the large roof overhang to the northern face welcomes school activity and the forecourt links directly into the school network. With careful planning Robina CPAC seamlessly integrates existing and new and activates the connections with a variety of exciting and inspiring spaces.
