The Swiss cantons of Vaud and Valais decided to build a communal hospital, an unprecedented event in the history of Switzerland. The Rennaz village site was chosen for its proximity to motorway infrastructure as well as its geographical location, symbolising the union of the two cantons. The hospital will be a horizontal three-level structure so as not to overwhelm the skyline of the neighbouring village. It espouses the surrounding landscape and fits in with the natural topography of the site. The accommodation is concentrated in a single block on the top floor of the building. It is made up of treatment units overlooking internal gardens protected from road pollution while also offering views of the expansive landscape. The rest of the medical facilities are concentrated on the first two levels inside a protective, reflective glass skin.
