Sited above the flood plain of the
Maumee River, this home – originally a small
1½ story cape cod – has had progressive additions and alterations over the
years, and finally required a complete overhaul. The living room, dining room, lower level
study, and bedrooms above were the only portions of the house unchanged. A large family room addition was added to the riverside
of the house, affording a gracious entertaining and relaxing space with a
broad, expansive view of the river valley.
The kitchen was reoriented and opened to a smaller, intimate eating and
sitting area, adjacent to the family room, and also to the stair to a lower
level exercise room, spa, and children’s recreation room. Above, the master bedroom was
refurnished and provided with a new master bath, dressing area, and new
laundry. The garage was relocated from the
lower level to the opposite side of the house, and raised up a half level,
providing easier access to the kitchen and main living area. Above the garage is a new guest room and
adjacent bath.
Exterior
materials include limestone flat work and walls, painted wood siding, asphalt
roofing, copper gutters and downspouts.
Interior materials include French limestone flooring, custom cherry
cabinetwork and wall panels, stainless steel details, granite and glass tile,
and Artemide and Flos light fixtures. Various lighting techniques were utilized
including specialty incandescent and fluorescent lamp sources. The glazed walls in the family room are
equipped with remote-controlled Meco shades which block out the mid-day sun.
