This project is the renovation of an approximately 150sf kitchen in New York City. The space lacked sufficent storage, organization and a seating area for the family with two young children.
The client’s insistence on the checkerboard pattern provided the nexus for the design. Building upon this traditional pattern, we explored the concept of the room as a sculptural object that is equal parts black and white. Drawing inspiration from sculptor Anish Kapoor’s Oracle, (part of the ‘void’ series) which consists of a large block of white sandstone with a rectangular ‘void’ of black pigment in the center, the concept developed of the white envelope being cut into to reveal its black interior.
