Beautifully proportioned rooms and striking windows set the stage for the renovation of this large one-bedroom apartment overlooking Riverside Park. To highlight the classic architecture, Shadow Architects worked to restore or recreate original moldings and details in the entry and living rooms, and then introduced a modern kitchen and bathroom to create a dialogue between the apartment’s history and its new life. While using standard off-the-shelf cabinetry and other components to manage the budget, the architects combined these elements with selected handcrafted features and materials to distinguish the spaces and start a new chapter for the home. Once the built-in items were in place, the firm put together an interior design program to combine the owner’s existing mid-century furniture and artwork with new furniture pieces and lighting.
