Riverside Building
In one of Recife’s most traditional districts—Madalena—Riverside emerges as a contemporary response to urban living, balancing scale, landscape, and quality of use. Designed by Mookamboo Studio for Tolive Incorporadora e Construtora, the residential building is grounded in a sensitive reading of its context, proposing new ways of living and engaging with the city.
Architecture Rooted in Place
Set along the banks of the Capibaribe River, Riverside places the river and its surrounding atmosphere at the forefront of the project. Rather than pursuing formal protagonism, the architecture acts as a mediator between everyday urban life and the abundant natural landscape that defines Madalena.
Its language is direct: clean lines, defined planes, and generous fenestration. Materiality reinforces this approach through a palette that combines white and black ceramic finishes, applied to emphasize solid and void, respectively. The result is a dynamic façade that shifts throughout the day with changing light and the rhythm of the city.
Stepped Form and Riverside Volumetry
More than a simple vertical tower, the building adopts a strategy of progressive setbacks on its upper floors, creating recessed terraces and a silhouette that unfolds with lightness. This gesture establishes a distinctive volumetric presence along the riverfront, balancing height and fluidity. By breaking away from the rigidity of conventional verticalization, the design introduces a scale that resonates more closely with the pedestrian experience.
A Generous Ground Level, A Porous City
At street level, Riverside opens itself to its surroundings through expansive pilotis and fluid landscaping, fostering integration with the sidewalk and adjacent uses. Rather than isolating itself, the building invites interaction—an important strategy in urban contexts where the interface between private space and the city is increasingly diminished.
Hybrid Uses and Everyday Possibilities
On the first and second floors, the building adopts a mixed-use configuration, combining residential units with a range of shared amenities. These include swimming pools with decks, a fitness center, coworking space, shared laundry, a party room, and a gourmet area. The aim is to provide a complete infrastructure for those who value practicality, community, and well-being without leaving home—reflecting increasingly flexible and urban lifestyles.
The apartments cater to diverse profiles: from compact studios to one- and two-bedroom units, culminating in three-bedroom penthouses with private rooftops overlooking Recife’s landscape. All units are designed to optimize space, ensure comfort, and maintain a strong visual connection to the river.
Between the Technical and the Sensory
Beyond technical solutions—such as solar energy infrastructure, rainwater harvesting, and durable materials—Riverside embodies the principles that drive Mookamboo’s architecture: attention to time, territory, and people. It is an architecture that observes, listens, and responds—here, with lightness, intelligence, and respect for what is most valuable in its setting.
