Commissioned by one of the most distinguished and affluent families of Surat, AANGAN is a residential bungalow that redefines luxury through restraint. Set on the serene banks of the Tapi River, the home presents a compelling architectural dialogue—deeply rooted in its context, yet unapologetically minimal and contemporary in its expression.
The client’s brief was both challenging and inspiring: to create a residence where personal and communal spaces seamlessly unfold toward uninterrupted views of the river. This vision became the spine of the design—orienting the home linearly to open up to the northern vistas while treating the southern façade as a canvas for interplay between massing, fenestration, and lush landscape layers.
Inspired by the idea of "Aangan"—a traditional Indian courtyard—the spatial planning integrates multiple breathing zones: sunlit courtyards, shaded patios, and river-facing balconies. These elements not only enhance the experience of living but also encourage natural ventilation and a sense of serenity throughout the home.
Volumetric play and spatial punctuations create visual intrigue, while large openings frame panoramic views, bathing the interiors in soft daylight. The result is a home that feels expansive, yet intimate; monumental, yet grounded.
At its core, architecture is a dialogue—a silent exchange between the designer’s values and the client’s lifestyle. AANGAN stands as a footprint of this conversation, translating the ethos of both parties into a residence that is refined, dynamic, and deeply personal.
More than a home, it is an evolving experience—sensitive to time, season, and the rhythms of life.
