RIVERLOFT(Renovation and Addition)Warren County, VirginiaThis project is the renovation of, and additions to, what was previously a small, circa 1970’s, T-I-II siding, builder "Colorado chalet," weekend house. The house is located along the Shenandoah River, with views of the Shenandoah National Park and the Skyline Drive to the northeast. The house was converted from a weekend getaway to a year- round residence, by adding to the northeast, southeast, and northwest faces of the existing structure. The primary northeast building addition was conceived of as a camera to the river, mountains, and Skyline Drive beyond. For the primary addition, the southeast roof plane of the existing gable roof was extended, and then folded ninety degrees to create a tall, three- story high wall of windows oriented to the River and the Skyline Drive. The spaces in this addition include a lower level living space, a two- story main living space, and a new staircase that connects the main level living space to a panoramic- view loft above. A library / catwalk connects the loft back to the original part of the house, which contains the guest bedrooms, baths, and kitchen. A new master bedroom was added to the southeast of the existing house; a new main entry, screened porch, and deck were added to the northwest. The building’s exterior materials are cementitious stucco; prefinished, flush and corrugated metal siding and soffits; standing seam copper roofs; and cable and steel guardrails.PROJECT CREDITSBuilder: Whittington Construction, Front Royal, VirginiaStructural Engineer: Structural Concepts, Inc., Winchester, VirginiaPhotographer: Hoachlander Davis Photography, Washington, D.C.
