This project was carried out by ADP's London studio, as the result of a limited design competition. Our approach was radically different from the other competitors, and gave the governors some major benefits.By sweeping the surrounding landscape over the roof of the building, with a single stroke we integrated the building form with its parkland setting. This simplified planning negotiation for a site on Green Belt land. The changing colour of the sedum roof has been a constant talking point for pupils and parents - its application demonstrates care and concern for landscape and the environment. These values are shared with the School community, one of the first in the country to introduce 'walking buses'.Fun elements include a giant triangular entrance form, while the school hall is picked-out as a blue cube. Internal windows are positioned at a height to suit the pupils, not the teachersThe innovative design has been recognised both in this country and abroad with awards and publication in books in journals. It has received a Civic Trust commendation and won Kent Building of the Year Award in 2003. The DfES (as it then was) and the BRE have both showcased the School in their publications on exemplary and sustainable infant school design.
