This project is the expansion and renovation of the 1970 Riverdale Neighborhood House (RNH) single story teen community center. The project’s design intent is to provide a beacon for community affairs and a home away from home for the teens of Riverdale. The 2nd floor addition gives the center an expanded volume, providing a mast-head for the public pool.
RNH was founded in 1872 as a lending library for Bronx neighborhood workers and evolved into a settlement house that offers human services for individuals and families, regardless of age or socioeconomic background. The present day site was assembled in 1930 and is comprised of the 1872 library building, the public pool, teen center, the administrative building and the exterior ball courts.
The new upper level enlargement/renovation adds a gymnasium/multi-purpose space, offices and storage to the existing campus. The lower level includes a refreshed shower/locker room space, a new computer lab and a lounge/recreation area. The gymnasium will house after-school athletic programs as well as adult leagues.
The mast-head concept is reinforced by the continuous roof cantilever, which provides an exterior shade terrace spanning the width of the public pool. The material palette consists of horizontally ribbed zinc siding panels with a lower base of fiber cement panels. This “light” material assembly visually contrasts the existing “heavy” masonry tradition of the adjacent library.
The new center honors RNH’s history as a community provider and, with its newly expanded program capacity, will help advance its long term goals of enhancing outreach services.
