design, code analysis, computer visualization and construction documents for the renovation of an existing office building. the project objective was to reorganize and renovate the existing offices of two distinct software development companies into an efficient, dynamic environment in which resources and physical space could be shared. the existing maze of small offices housed in the pre-engineered steel building was transformed into an open office with support spaces on the ground floor and a lounge space as well as storage on the mezzanine level.
conceptually, the project consists of a curved blue wall that bisects the building to create the main work space on one side and the private offices on the other. additionally, numerous distinct volumes complement the large open space and bring the scale down to smaller proportions. the curved wall represents a river, the icon of the larger company, where the free-flow of ideas and communications are to come together. these elements evolve into colorful walls and planes that meet in careful intersections to create a dynamic and stimulating atmosphere. the essential functions consist of the main work space, the private offices, a conference room, server rooms and the service area, as well as kitchen/lounge room and storage areas. the program required that most spaces - and the equipment they house - could be shared by both companies. significant budget restraints forced us to work with economical materials in a creative fashion in order to achieve the client's objectives. construction grade plywood was finished and used throughout as backdrops and trim work. exposed concrete was used for the reception desk, while painted drywall - the main material - was utilized to create the curved wall and the boxes within the building.
