The house was designed for a couple from two different continents (being British & Australian) and their four children as their first house together in Australia. While there are subtle references to British tradition, the house celebrates their move to Australia and embraces the outdoors.
There are four priorities for the building and the interior design;
THE AUSTRALIAN INFLUENCE - a seamless transition from outdoor to indoor spaces and the strong connection between them. Bringing the outside inside. Large opening strengthen the visual connection between inside and out while boundaries are blurred through the use of external materials within the house such as alluvial stone and copper lining.
THE BRITISH INFLUENCE - a requirement for a high standard of detail and 'solid' interior materials and cabinetwork. The house has been designed to be timeless and age gracefully, influencing the building form and choice of finishes. Robust materials such as natural stone, copper and timber have been used fro their aged patina and texture, detail and visual interest.
A SENSE OF BELONGING - the definition of strong, comfortable interior spaces to inhabit within the large open planned house. Constant visual contact with the river is maintained from all rooms. Highlight windows were used to allow constant visual connection to the sky. The 'hub' of the house is the external terrace which becomes the blurred connection to the internal living areas via the large automated sliding doors. The terrace unifies the living areas.
A SENSE OF SERENITY AND CALM - walls, ceilings and cabinetwork are expressed as unadorned interlocking sculptural blocks and planes resulting in a calm understated setting. Light fittings are either recessed to disappear or are suspend as feature fixtures. Timber batten ceilings not only add visual warmth but also act as acoustic baffles concealing the acoustic insulation above them.
INTEGRATED DESIGN - we have integrated the design of the building, the interior design, furnishings and landscaping to achieve a consistent ethos to all aspects of the house.
