CHAIRMAN’S HOUSE
The building had to be designed and put up in three months, to provide a residence for the Chairman during the company’s annual G.B.M. ; the other requirement was pitched and tiled roofs- a brief, difficult to reconcile.
Both the demands were fulfilled, the latter by using an R.C.C. flat slab construction above which was laid a light weight filling of brick-bats,which carried a mangalore-tiled roof. The site had black cotton soil and a high water table necessitating a strip raft foundation and minimal building weight. The garden pavilion overlooking the river was however a real teak wood truss roof, carried over an R.C.C. frame.
