The city of Riga raises questions about the status of the central train station and the link between city centre, north from the train line, and the canal and market place in the south.
Creation of urban and landscape connections
The project creates links following two major guidelines: one is parallel to the rails completing the landscape network, the second is perpendicular and create an urban way between the two parts of the rails.
The existing linear park around the canal and island is connected with the city centre through: urban planning around the canal, work on the railway embankments and a new footbridge. The urban link is achieved by reorganizing the train station and its urban spaces, creating generous and luminous pathways under railways.
Reinforcing the city-city link
The existing train station has different and independent time periods buildings made without global strategy. Our proposal gathers the different buildings with a longitudinal open hall. This hall reuses existing protected elements such as dark red, white and black paving and the main stairs.
The spaces under the railways are restructured and opened to create a real city-city continuity. The pathways become covered shopping promenades by doubling their width and increasing their height. They receive natural light from the docks by glazed skylight.
The design of the space is made as a continuity of the outdoor public space’s design.
Lending a specific identity through a strong signal
The proposal creates a real south façade for the first time rejuvenating the Timoteja Iela street. The vocabulary used remind the existing soviet curtain-wall façade.
The project partially covers the railways thanks to a roof following geometric latvian pattern, centred on use to bring thermic comfort, light and a warm colour ambiance from a sparing material design. It becomes the train station strong signal.
