Aiming to refresh the interior design of the New York clothing
showrooms, our Client sought to evoke the spirit and whimsy of their
collections, brand licensing and character graphics. Their recently
launched new website served as a strong visual inspiration for the
spirit the environment would embody. The functionalities of the spaces
remained unchanged, yet the detailing and articulation of the flow
between spaces needed to be re-thought. After an extensive collaborative design exploration, we re-imagined the
Entry Foyer as a three dimensional rendition of the Client’s website
home page. Dimensional cutouts of doors, windows and awnings defined
the space, somewhat inspired by Michel Gondry, with “Le Cafe”, a
“Newsstand” and the “Shop Entrance” - artwork directly lifted from the
website. On entering the Showrooms, the notion of Alice in Wonderland’s
“Through the Looking Glass” drove the visual spirit of the aesthetic.
Creating a visual narrative around the product display walls, the space
is articulated with over-sized furniture at the entry, whimsical
‘hand-drawn’ display rods, painted furniture, and an illusory
“door-within-a-door-within-a-door” at the far end of the environment.
We succeeded in re-imagining the Showrooms, infusing them with the brand
identity, all the while enhancing the presentation of the product
itself.
